Fa-BOO-lous weekend at FFC Clog Camp 2019! DAY ONE
Clog Camp 2019 at Fancy Free Studio has it all: Halloween theme, dance studio sleepover, toilet paper toss, team spirit, dance-off, and so much more.
This annual event is not what you might expect. We don’t spend the whole weekend dancing, and non-cloggers are heartily welcomed. It’s more of a team-building and bonding weekend, although previous years have included campers from Chillicothe Dance and the Riverside Cloggers.
Clog Camp begins with the welcome circle, a necessary introduction activity as there are usually a few new recreational dancers who haven’t yet crossed paths with some of the competition folks. Each person gives their name and a fun fact about themselves. For those playing along at home, Remington is four years old and he likes monster trucks.
The tricky part? You must re-introduce everyone who went before you, so the game gets progressively more difficult! Brennen sat near midpoint and had quite a list to recite, including his Uncle Jake’s favorite dinosaur (T-Rex).
Following the welcome circle, campers don the official camp shirt and break into teams to compete all weekend for the “King of the Hill” banner. Tent decorating is the first battle, and the three teams set to work to prepare their spaces.
It’s the Fancy Femurs (green) vs Dancing Ghosts (yellow) vs Cat-a-tonics (blue).
Yes, it’s time to clog! Teammate Dustin choreographed and taught this year’s camp dance to “Rotten to the Core,” which thrilled our kiddos who love the Descendants movies. We found time for favorite fun dances too, especially “Skeleton Scat.”
After a sack lunch, each team got a turn in the studio to create a skit to perform for the parents Sunday afternoon.
The activity rotation included games for each team, allowing them to earn points for the “King of the Hill” banner, the ultimate title at clog camp.
Evie’s unique take on cornhole, the toilet paper toss, gets plenty of giggles each year!
The other game involved walking with a potato between your legs, but this crew enjoys mixing it up!
The entire Fancy Free family helps this event go smoothly! Clogger fiance Jake cooked hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill for the cookout. The menu included cheese ball prepared by my Handsome Gentleman and pasta salad made by Beth’s dad.
Mr. Olds, your 6-year-old granddaughter is proud of your cooking skills. She informed EVERYONE that the pasta salad came from “MY papaw!”
Despite early morning rain, the weather cleared for the rest of the weekend, allowing everyone to spread out for dinner in the yard.
The karaoke/lip sync contest was all Myla’s idea! She set the bar high as the first act, arriving with a full costume and a plan.
Molly and Kayla ultimately won the lip sync/karaoke title with their rendition of Meghan Trainor’s “No.” A sassy strut into the audience put them solidly in the lead.
As darkness fell, the singing came to a close with a group rendition of “A Whole New World” from Aladdin.
Wishes at the lake finished out the activity list before bedtime. Evie purchased biodegradable lanterns, and each camper and helper got a chance to set a wish afloat.
Evie’s wish is easy to identify; it’s the one going down in flames! Maybe try again next year?
All this excitement and we still have another day of clog camp! Check it out in the next post.
Thank you to the volunteers and to the campers for making this a great camp year!
